Hi
Im new to this site and thought Id seek your advice on Lough eskragh, my friend and me plan to go there within the next 2 weeks and were wondering how its fishing and whats your advice on line and flies to try. I fish alot on lough ern and melvin and plenty of small still waters but never for rainbows on larger loughs and from a drifting boat.

I have a di3 line but would this get the flies down quick enough during this cold weather to where the fish are or should i invest in a 5 or7?

Any help would be really appreciated!

hi welcome to the forum Very Happy your di-3 lines should do fine at eskragh blobs and cormorants will work last i visited sunburst and orange blobs worked well as did red, bigger fish were caught on cats whiskers and some people were catching well on buzzers fished near the service but that was in the summer when the weather was better, if you have a few boobys i would give them a go one on the point with a few cormorants on the droppers on the di-3 and that should get you fish, failing that if the fish are spooky a single blob may work or cats whisker etc dont rule out nymphs or flies like bloodworms etc but i think you should be ok with what ive said so far you might be best with a drogue as this will help you fish more effectively as you wont be drifting as fast an your flies will get down to the fish quicker hope this helps

Hi

I was there on tuesday last, and caught 4 nice trout, one a lovely fish at over 4 lb.my m8 paddy caught 2 fish.It was freezing that day, there was ice floating on the surface around the top of the lake.Di 5 and booby blobs worked for me,taking all my fish just 100 yds out from the jetty. The top of the lake always fishes well, but was frozen at the time we were there.............Cheers.

Hi Maddy and everyone else
Yes was there yest and really enjoyed it! I had 3 in the boat and lost 4 and my mate landed 2 and lost 3! they just seemed to be nipping at the flies, lures worked for most of the fish but near 3pm a rise came on and got the last one on a buzzer.
Bright clear sky greeted us when we arrived and up till lunchtime we had still blanked but after lunch we had a good spell of solid hook ups and good cloud cover.
We didnt actually get fishing very long as my boat partner had to be back early but we went away smileing which is the main thing.

3 of the fish would have been 3pounders ad the rest just under 2pound but boy can they fight.

Will try and get back before the mayfly starts as will be spending most of the time on erne and melvin then.

I have a few pics which will try and put up soon.

I fished Eskragh with the guys from Flyfishingireland.org last saturday, ended up with 2 fish but my 2nd fish (below) tipped 6lb on the scales and took a pseudo diawl bach on fast glass stripped slowly

Hi Chris

Ignore my post on the other thread asking what you got this one on lol

It's a great fish. The rest of the Eskragh trout on this thread have great tails as well. The fish there are good and fight well.
